Twenty-Five

After meeting with Maxim, Drake and Sierra headed to their hotel that was located in the middle of Kyiv.

Drake was quiet.

He was looking out the window of the hotel room.

Outside the hotel, the streets of Kyiv were empty and quiet. The diverse and unique architecture of the capital of Ukraine featured a blend between the old and new: Soviet Modernism, Ukraine Baroque, and art nouveau. As one of the oldest cities in Europe, it featured beautiful cathedrals and palaces built well before the 18th century. And as one of the Soviet era’s most cherished state entities, it featured dominating, and oppressive Soviet architecture—prisons, government offices, and housing apartments dotted the city and gave its skyline a unique view.

The hotel Drake and Sierra were staying at was called The Old Palace and was located in the Shevchenkivs’kyi District in the city. A district close to Taras Shevchenko National University. Their one-bedroom room was located on the fourth floor. The district was usually busy—drunk students or tourists flocked to the area for its elegant restaurants and art galleries.

The sky was cloudless, but the stars were hidden behind the dense light pollution.

Sierra watched the news from the hotel bed. She was mostly watching to get an update on the situation in Washington—to find out what was going on with Price and the CIA.

She was watching the BBC. The anchor spoke with a patronizing and elite British accent.

“Russian military forces continue to move to the border of Ukraine. It is a build-up of military strength not seen in Europe since World War II. While member states of the European Union have criticized Russia’s deliberate aggression, the United States has remained unusually quiet. The former adversary of the Soviet Union seems comfortable letting things happen as they will. American President Roy Clarkson said recently in an address relating to the hostilities in Europe that the United States will help foster a relationship of peace between the two nations. That the only option is peace.”
